As a freelancer and a lazy person who likes it when other people make food for her, I spend quite a lot of my work time in cafés here in Barcelona.
Here’s a list of some of my favourite spots in the city for working, coffee drinking and snacking, in no particular order…
A friend introduced me to this place, which I’d previously written off as just another bakery chain. I am now a loyal customer. Free, decent WiFi and decent coffees and snacks. Sold.
There are quite a few of them around the city, but the one closest to me (on Carrer de Mallorca in Eixample) is excellent. On a corner, with floor to ceiling windows, it lets in lots of light throughout winter. The downside is that you might actually need to avoid the tables by the window—the Barcelona sun is a thing of beauty, but direct sun screen glare is not your friend.
One day I might write a post about eating establishments in Barcelona that does not include Quinoa, but today is not that day.
The original Quinoa in Gracia is charmingly small, cramped and cozy, so it’s not a working destination. Their newer branch in Exiample, on the busy Carrer d’Arago, is more spacious, and – for reasons I cannot fathom – usually very quiet. Perhaps it’s not quite as well known yet. Either way, it has WiFi and the food is just as awesome as at the original.
So, I’m going to just put it out there. I think Santa Gloria has *maybe* the best croissants in Barcelona. This is my main reason for going there, but it does also have WiFi. There are a bunch of Santa Gloria cafés around the city and I can’t comment on them all, but the one closest to me in Eixample has quite a few tables.
It doesn’t attract the usual young, college and expat crowd that you’ll find in a lot of the best WiFi coffee shops.
Full disclosure: I’ve never actually brought my laptop to work here. BUT it does have free WiFi and yummy food and drinks.
It’s a small and unassuming place with a nice bohemian vibe, and it’s just across from the Arc de Triomf and Parc de la Ciutadella, so once you’ve finished working/studying, you can head out for a little stroll around the park. Win-win.
A special, and final, mention goes to Green & Berry. I raved about it in my post on vegetarian food in Barcelona, but it warrants inclusion here as the WiFi is also rather good.
If you’re on a student budget you may want to stick to a coffee or snack, but if you can splash out, the acai bowls are delicious.
That’s it for now. There are plenty of good places to work from in Barcelona, but these are a handful of my favourites. If you’ve got any other suggestions, please let me know!
Un abrazo,
Laura P
